Title – Assistant Pastor for Shepherding and Care

Description – The Assistant Pastor of Shepherding and Care at Knox Presbyterian Church is called to shepherd and care for the congregation to experience gospel-growth in Christlikeness

Reports to / committee relationships – Accountable to Session; Supervised by the Senior Pastor

Full or part-time (target hours per week, if part-time) – Full-time

Exempt, non-exempt – Exempt


Position responsibilities

  • Leads the community group ministry of the church, which includes casting and carrying vision, equipping and encouraging the community group leadership team, and training and coaching community group leaders
  • Provides counseling and crisis care to congregants
  • Serves in visitation ministry to hospitals, nursing and care facilities, and homes
  • Supports the deacons in leading the congregation in mercy ministry
  • Equips lay leaders in areas including Men’s, Women’s and Senior ministries, Premarital and Marriage Counseling, GriefShare, and Divorce Care
  • Provides additional support for the life of the church, including leading worship, preaching, teaching, and cultivating vision among the congregation

Professional qualifications

  • Master of Divinity degree and ordination by the Evangelical Presbyterian Church (or transferable ordination) are required. A counseling degree is also preferred.
  • High emotional intelligence and cross-cultural competency
  • Proficiency in team-building and leadership, with demonstrated ability to encourage and collaborate with pastoral and program staff and lay leaders
  • History of winsome, godly engagement with universities and/or postmodern, pluralistic culture

Personal qualifications

  • Personal, growing relationship with Jesus, evidenced by humility, integrity, and maturity in speech and conduct, according to 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1.
  • Commitment to live as a “lead repenter” with a teachable, approachable spirit
  • Ability to relate redemptively, missionally, and cross-culturally to a range of ages
  • If married, priority in pursuing a gospel-centered marriage and family life
