Local Missions
We want to be a church in our community and for our community. Here are some ways we reach out to those around us as a church and in partnership with other agencies.
Friends in Deed
Founded in 1983, Friends in Deed (FID) helps families with emergency needs such as utility shut-offs, furniture, prescription and medical needs, and transportation. FID is always in need of help with furniture deliveries.
Please contact Dan Tjarks for additional information.
Dicken School
During the year, our Deacons sponsor various initiatives at Dicken School from backpacks/school supplies to Thanksgiving Baskets to volunteer tutoring and coaching opportunities.
Family Life Services
Family Life Services is a pregnancy help center whose mission is to assist women with unplanned pregnancies. Their goal is to help these women acquire accurate information about the options for their pregnancy and support their decision process. Administrative volunteers and help line representatives are welcome! Knox participates in a number of fund raising initiatives during the year.
Contact Dan Tjarks to learn more.
The Villa at Parkridge
Once a week Knox deacons and members visit residents of The Villa at Parkridge, an elder care facility (formerly Bortz Nursing Home) and host an informal worship service.
For information on volunteering, RSVP to Migi Cherif or Barb Dick.
Homeless ministry/Hill House
A quarterly meal is provided for the homeless at Hill House (formerly Mercy House / Camp Take Notice).
Email Barb Dick with questions or to sign up to help.
Hope Clinic
Hope Clinic is an interdenominational Christian medical, dental and social service organization in Ypsilanti founded to provide health care to the uninsured. Over time, its ministry has expanded into other areas of community need. Hope needs trained medical personnel to give of their time and talents. Administrative help is also needed.
Find out more about the work of Hope Clinic and how you can participate by connecting with Bob Ause, Sr.
Huron Valley Correctional Center
Each second Sunday of the month, Knox members lead worship for the inmates at Huron Valley Correctional Center (HVCC), the only prison in Michigan housing women. Women are also needed for visitation/correspondence – we have many unfilled requests from prisoners seeking to be paired with a Christian woman.
RSVP to Tim Rogne or Pastor Mike Frison.
Military Avenue Presbyterian Church
Military Avenue Presbyterian Church is our sister church in southwest Detroit. Every Monday night during the school year volunteers are needed to serve as tutors for school-age children. No prior experience required, but must be an adult (or high school age with parental permission). Transportation is available on the church bus. Knox has participated in this program for many years, with blessings flowing to both students and tutors!
To register or for more information, contact Lewis Clark.
Staples Family Center
Staples Family Center (SFC) is a ministry of the Salvation Army that serves homeless families. Our Knox family provides child care one evening a month to assist parents who are trying to help their families get back on their feet.
RSVP to Marilyn McFerren.
