Worship Director

JOB DESCRIPTION

 

Knox Presbyterian Church, Ann Arbor, MI is seeking a Worship Director to oversee all worship-related aspects of the life of the church, with particular focus on Sunday morning worship. Knox is a medium-sized (about 270 family units), multi-generational church in the EPC denomination, serving Ann Arbor and several surrounding communities. The congregation of Knox has a long history of enthusiastic singing in worship.

Position responsibilities

  • Plan weekly worship services in collaboration with the Pastoral staff, including selection of music appropriate to a mix of ages, generations, ethnicities, and skill levels
  • Provide artistic/creative input to non-musical aspects of the worship service
  • Regularly lead and/or coordinate Sunday morning worship, and oversee volunteers serving in this role
  • Manage weekly scheduling of musicians and audiovisual tech personnel
  • Recruit, mentor, and encourage both the spiritual and musical growth of musicians
  • Supervise the Special Music Director and Organist
  • Coordinate additional music-focused events outside of the Sunday morning worship service, such as seasonal services (Easter, Christmas) and musical outreach (e.g. hosted musical ensembles); also collaborate with Children and Youth Ministry Directors on worship-related activities
  • Expand the church’s vision of what it means to worship God with both heart and mind, and help the congregation grow in faith and appreciation of His attributes, through a growing repertoire of music that reflects the fullness of the church’s history and culture
  • Provide oversight of worship-related budget items and capital expenditures
  • Oversee copyright and licensing compliance

Professional qualifications

  • Able to lead worship both vocally and musically, preferably from the piano and/or guitar
  • Able to rehearse and direct worship teams (teaching vocal parts, directing multiple instruments, transposing parts as necessary, leading occasional choral arrangements etc.)
  • Able to incorporate music and worship from multiple genres and cultures while maintaining a seamless aesthetic and theological depth; knowledge of theological/contextual background of music
  • Values congregational participation over polished performance, but still fosters musical excellence in worship teams comprising members with varying skill levels and experience
  • Familiar with the technical aspects and terminology of sound systems
  • Exhibits strong organizational and communication skills

  • Agrees with the doctrine of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church
  • Committed to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, exemplifying maturity in life and speech as becomes a leader in the church (e.g. 1 Tim. 3; Titus 1)
  • Demonstrates a love of God and His people, and a desire to see God’s name glorified in worship
  • Engages people with a servant’s heart; willing to step up to lead or step back from the spotlight as needed
  • Pursues spiritual and professional growth, through personal study and participation in forums and workshops
